Golf, Yoga, Girl Talk

Highlights from the ASF's Women's Wounded Warrior Weekend

Back by popular demand, the Women’s Wounded Warrior event took place on June 5 th-7 th in Windham, New York. Nine severely injured United States servicewomen enjoyed the beautiful Catskills, met other wounded women, learned/practiced several new sports, and got a healthy dose of girl talk. For some it was a chance to reconnect with the ladies they met at last year’s event and for others it was a chance to meet new friends.

The Wounded Warrior program for women concentrates on maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Upon arrival, the ladies enjoyed a wonderful meal prepared by (ASF volunteer instructor) Lou Caracciolo at the Brandywine Restaurant. Saturday morning began with hearty breakfast at the Thompson House, after which the ladies headed for Christman’s Golf Course. Under the watchful eye of Eric Leach (Christman’s head golf pro) and several ASF volunteers, each woman worked on driving, iron shots, and chipping and putting skills. The ladies spent the afternoon at the Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center participating in yoga and Pilates sessions. After a rest back at the Thompson House, everyone returned for a cooking class conducted by ASF Program Director, Pam Greene who was a professional chef in “another life.” From all reports everyone left with a few new recipes and very full bellies! The weekend concluded with nine holes of golf at Christman’s Golf Course.

The feedback from the women was overwhelming positive and they can’t wait to return next year. When asked what she enjoyed most about the event, Army SGT Kisha Makerney replied, “…being able to be around other female wounded warriors.”

Nancy Schilliro, a retired Marine who also participated in last year’s event said, “I always enjoy coming up to spend time with the Adaptive Sports Foundation ladies. They always put together a great weekend that everyone enjoys!”

SGT Lilina Benning adds, “…beside the golf, the thing I enjoyed most about the event was the fact that it was an all-woman retreat.”

The only negative comment the female warriors and volunteers could come up with was that the event was too short. Next year, the ASF will try to make the event three full days. However, to add another day increases the costs. These very special events for our United States servicemen and women are funded entirely through private grants and donations from individuals and corporations. ASF Welcomes Wounded Warriors Back to Burden Lake

On July 31st, the ASF will once again welcome severely wounded United States servicemen and women and their families to the annual Wounded Warrior Watersports Festival. The August watersports weekend, held on Burden Lake, NY (outside Albany), includes water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and tubing. An important outcome of this event is to allow the wounded soldiers and Marines to spend quality recreational time with their families. Soldiers are encouraged to bring their spouses and children with the goal of the event to be the inclusion of the disabled troops back into family activities. For further information on how you can support this and other Wounded Warrior events click here.

ASF Volunteers Graduate

This year 21 of the ASF’s volunteers graduated from high school. We are very proud of all the students who took time out of their busy high school schedules to volunteer with the Adaptive Sports Foundation. Their duties included teaching, office work, and special event help. These 21 students donated over 1,000 hours of volunteer service during the 2008-09 season.

If their commitment to volunteerism does not impress you, then where they are going to college will! Institutions include the Adelphi University, Boston College, Columbia Greene Community College, Dutchess County Community College, Lehigh University, SUNY Morrisville, University of Delaware, Union College, United States Air Force Academy, University of Rochester, Wesley College and Villanova University.
