Recovering freedom through adaptive sports!

For the past four years, the Adaptive Sports Foundation in partnership with Disabled Sports USA, the Wounded Warrior Project and the New York City Fire Department has been offering programs to United States servicemen and women who have been permanently injured in the Global War on Terrorism. To date, we have served over 150 soldiers and Marines whose disabilities range from amputation, nerve damage and spinal cord injuries. These special events are powerful reminders of not only the cost of our freedoms but the special bonds that can be forged through giving back.

We have brought servicemen and women to Windham Mountain for a 3-day ski and snowboard vacation as well as brought additional servicemen and their families to Burden Lake, New York for an Adaptive Watersport Festival. It costs approximately $1,500 to bring one soldier or Marine to a 3-day event. This includes airfare, lodging, food, lessons, instructor training, specific sport clothing and equipment, and transportation. These events are funded completely through the private sector. Fundraisers and individual donations are the reason the Adaptive Sports Foundation can continue to provide these events to these very special individuals.

Adaptive Sports Foundation's Wounded Warrior Adaptive Water Sport Festival
Burden Lake, New York August 4th & 5th, 2007

On August 4th and 5th at Burden Lake in upstate New York, the Adaptive Sports Foundation hosted its first Wounded Warrior Adaptive Water Sports Festival. In partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project and Disabled Sport USA, the ASF brought in 12 United States servicemen and their families for a fun weekend of waterskiing, paddling, windsurfing and tubing! With over 100 volunteers, the ASF was able to provide quality sport experiences to not only the Wounded Warriors but to their families as well. Thanks to our army of dedicated volunteers, all of the 45 participants were able to experience at least one water sport if not two or three!

Former Navy Combat Engineer Mark Mix stated, "Participating in adaptive sports totally eliminates everything, all your disabilities and your problems. I can't fail at anything because of my three kids and I want them to be able to do whatever I can do. If I can do it, they can do it."

Mix's wife, Jasue stated, "It makes me very happy to see Mark doing things he's never done before so that he can see for himself that it's not the end of the world. He can still do things."

This event was the first of its kind in the history of the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project in the sense that it included the entire family. Wounded Warriors were encourage to bring their whole families so that each family member could experience the activities right alongside their fathers and husbands.

Army Captain Christopher Ayers stated, "I wanted to thank you for this past weekend at Burden Lake. Renee, I and the girls had a wonderful time. My family would not have been able to enjoy so many outdoor activities in one setting had you all not provided it. My eyes light up to see the excitement on my family's face and that was the most priceless moment for me this weekend."

The ASF would like to thank all the volunteers that donated their time and energy to the 2007 Wounded Warrior Adaptive Water Sports Festival. In addition, the ASF would like to thank our many sponsors who made this event possible.
