Soldier Stories

“My wife and I wanted to relay our sincerest gratitude for the incredible weekend that we had in February. Your support for wounded soldiers, such as myself, is a true testament to the strength of our nation. Since I was injured, it has been a goal of mine to once again return to the slopes. Thanks to everyone at the Adaptive Sports Foundation I reached that goal. Not enough can be said about the confidence that many of the soldiers were given during the course of the weekend. We are thankful for all the effort and collaboration that went into planning for the event. My wife and I had such a wonderful time and look forward to returning sometime in the future.

John Fernandez, Army Lieutenant, West Point Graduate

"Prior to this weekend I wasn't really into skiing. But going out there and seeing the disabled ASF instructors doing it, that was pretty cool. The fact that the instructors were disabled war veterans inspired me. It made my weekend"

Hilbert Ceaser, retired Army Staff Sergeant

“The moment where I was standing up on that ski was a great moment. It’s cool to go water skiing, but even better having my teenage son ski with me and try to keep up. As a Dad and a guy trying to get back to something called normal…well, there was no pity in his eyes – it was, ‘Dad’s back!’”

First Lieutenant Ed Salau of the National Guard

“My name is Kenny Lukes. I live in Iowa and was one of the wounded soldiers that went to Windham for the adaptive ski program. I am writing to thank you for everything that was done for us. From the lodging, food, the New York City firemen, the volunteer instructors, to the singing school kids who almost made a 30 year old cry. It was overwhelming. It made me even prouder to have served this country for people who haven’t forgotten the soldiers’ personal sacrifices. As for myself, I lost my arm above the elbow. I would do it all over again for my country and for people like the Windham community. Once again, please let everyone know that a soldier in Iowa is very grateful to you all!

Kenny Lukes, retired Army Sergeant
