WINDHAM, N.Y. – The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) hosted its two multi-sport summer camps the past two weekends, hosting a total of 13 students for two three-day camps that featured fun outdoor and water activities. The camps took place on August 16-18 and August 23-25.
Both camp sessions featured a similar schedule that emphasized teaching participants the fundamentals of team sports, kayaking and golf. Each camp featured a day dedicated to kayaking and playing shore games at CD Lane Park and its lake. Participants and volunteers enjoyed a 1.5-mile hike through the forest and around the park’s lake before putting their life jackets on and hitting the water in kayaks. Campers were able to learn proper rowing techniques and to enjoy the serenity of being on a lake in a quiet mountain town. When campers weren’t in their vessels, they were able to swim in the designated swimming area and play games on shore, such as cornhole.
Another day at the ASF multi-sport camp was focused on team-building sports. CD Lane Park has a basketball court, a baseball diamond and a soccer field where campers were able to learn new skills and the importance of teamwork. After a morning of shooting hoops and playing kickball and soccer, the participants were able to journey over to Christman’s Windham Mountain House. Campers were allowed to learn how to properly hold a golf club and swing on the driving range before hitting the putting green and working on their short game.
The third and final day of both ASF multi-sport camps featured a trip to Heidi Ruehlmann’s alpaca farm in nearby Prattsville. Campers were given permission by Ruehlmann and the farm’s caretaker, Frank Cabrera, who is an ASF skateboard coach at the organization’s skateboard camps, to enter the alpaca pen and feed the tranquil animals fruit and oats. After the alpacas had their breakfasts, the participants enjoyed a quick hike around Ruehlmann’s pond to end the morning activities. The campers would then pile into the ASF shuttle bus to ride back to the ASF’s Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center for a barbecue lunch before saying their goodbyes.
The next summer program the ASF will conduct will be its Warriors in Motion® golf event, which takes place on September 11 and 12.
