The ASF will be hosting its Multi-Sport Recreation Weekend this weekend, August 13-16.

WINDHAM, N.Y. — The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) will host its Multi-Sport Summer Recreation Weekend in Windham for individuals with disabilities Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 13-16.

The ASF’s Multi-Sport Summer Recreation Weekend provides students with opportunities to exercise, explore the outdoors and have fun at CD Lane Park and other locations throughout the Windham area. The first three days of the four-day camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with lunch at 11:30 a.m. The final day will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at noon with lunch at the ASF lodge.

The first day will begin at CD Lane Park, where participants will meet ASF staff and volunteers. They will start the morning with a nature walk around the park’s lake and through the surrounding wooded areas. After getting their legs moving, the group will head to the soccer fields to practice drills and play a game before breaking for lunch. Once everyone has eaten, participants will take part in more team sports, including basketball and kickball, before being picked up at the end of the day.

On Friday, students will enjoy a beach day at CD Lane Park. They will arrive in the morning, select a kayak and head out onto the lake. After spending time on the water, the group will break for lunch before participating in more lake activities in the afternoon. For students who prefer to stay ashore, ASF will offer lawn games and volleyball.

Saturday’s activities will take place in Tannersville, with students meeting at Rip Van Winkle Lake Park. From there, the ASF shuttle will transport the group to Dibbles Quarry for a 1.5-mile hike. Students will picnic along the trail before making the 1.5-mile trek back in the afternoon. The shuttle will then return the group to Rip Van Winkle Lake Park, where students can explore the playground before being picked up at the end of the day.

On the final day of camp, participants will meet at the ASF’s Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center. From there, the ASF shuttle will take them to nearby Prattsville to visit Heidi Ruehlmann’s alpaca farm. Frank Cabrera, who regularly participates in ASF’s Adaptive Skateboard Camp and serves as the foundation’s snowboard competitions coach during the winter, helps care for Ruehlmann’s herd of alpacas. Cabrera and Ruehlmann will welcome ASF students for a morning of feeding and interacting with the tranquil animals. The students will then return to the ASF lodge for a pizza lunch before departing.

Participants are expected to bring a bagged lunch and snacks, along with a bathing suit, towel, appropriate footwear for various activities and any personal items they may need.
