The Adaptive Sports Foundation renames annual Warriors in Motion weekend in memory of Robert Stubbs

On January 31, 2020, the Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) announced that it will be dedicating its Warriors in Motion® Learn to Ski & Ride event to Robert “Bob” Stubbs.  Bob Stubbs, former ASF Board of Trustees chairman, ASF parent and long-time supporter passed away two weeks ago.  Beginning in 2021, the ASF’s Warriors in Motion weekend will be named the Bob Stubbs Warriors in Motion Winter Sport Weekend.

For the past 15 years, the Adaptive Sports Foundation has hosted the Warriors in Motion® Learn to Ski and Ride event for injured United States servicemen and women.  In 2005, the ASF was contacted by Disabled Sports USA and Walter Reed Army Medical Center to host newly injured soldiers and Marines for a ski weekend.  With no funding to support such a weekend, the ASF immediately said yes and was honored to be chosen to host our nation’s heroes.   As an Army veteran himself, when Bob Stubbs discovered the need for funding he was one of the first ASF donors to ensure that these nine wounded warriors had everything they needed for a weekend of fun and empowerment on the slopes.

Since 2005, Bob Stubbs has continued to support the ASF’s Warriors in Motion programs with not only financial support but with friendship, love and moral support.  Each event Bob and his wife Rosie attended, they made lifelong friends.  Many of the original nine warriors that came in 2005 are still in contact with the Stubbs family to this day.

“Bob’s dedication to all those we serve at the ASF, our participants, veterans, volunteers, the staff, and board, set a very high standard. He was a great man, with a huge heart who loved his family, his friends, his country, the mission of the ASF and Windham.  Bob’s spirit will live on through one of his favorite events, the Warriors in Motion Winter Weekend. “ – Vince Passione, Chairman of the ASF Board of Trustees

The Learn to Ski & Ride event involves the veteran and his or her entire family in sports they can continue to do together after their return home. ASF volunteer instructors guide warriors and their families through experiences that give them the skills to ski and snowboard. A secondary goal of the event is to allow participants to spend quality recreational and social time with their friends, family and fellow veterans.

The ASF’s Warriors in Motion programs provide participating injured veterans with a basic knowledge and practice of wellness and the importance of lifelong healthy living. Participants learn through interactive and experiential environments and explore all aspects of wellness and human performance. Veterans engage through sports, outdoor activity, and recreation, and investigate how the physical self is tied to the emotional/psychological self, and how state-of-mind can affect the physical body.
