ASF to Test Vets’ Athleticism in WIM Multisport Event

Summary

Veterans will cycle, kayak and play team sports in WIM Multisport Event June 23-25

WINDHAM, N.Y.The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) will test a group of veterans’ skills June 23-25 when it hosts its Warriors in MotionĀ® (WIM) Multisport event.

The WIM Multisport event will give 11 veterans the opportunity to cycle, kayak and participate in team sports throughout the week. The veterans are scheduled to arrive at the Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center on Tuesday afternoon to meet the ASF staff and volunteers who will work with them throughout the week. They will mingle over lunch before reviewing the week’s schedule and being fitted for equipment.

The first activity will be road cycling. The group will strap on helmets and ride 15 miles around the town of Windham. After the ride, the veterans will check into their hotel and rest before returning to the ASF lodge for dinner.

On Wednesday, ASF staff and volunteers will meet the veterans at their hotels with their bikes at 9 a.m. The group will ride about six miles to CD Lane Park in Maplecrest. From there, they will head to the park’s lake, where a fleet of ASF kayaks will be waiting for them for a morning on the water.

In the afternoon, the veterans will have several options to continue their active day. They can play beach volleyball, head to the baseball diamond for kickball or participate in a short mountain bike clinic through the park’s woods. Whatever activity the group chooses, ASF will have the necessary equipment available. The day will conclude with a six-mile bike ride back to the hotel before dinner at the ASF lodge.

On Thursday morning, the ASF shuttle bus will transport participants to Colgate Lake in Jewett for a relaxing morning of kayaking. The WIM group will return to the ASF lodge for lunch before saying goodbye.

U.S. Navy veteran Saha Kumar will attend next week’s event and is excited to be challenged both physically and mentally.

“The ASF’s warrior program gives me a physical challenge, sure, but it also gives me a mental challenge as well,” he said. “Doing all of these activities we have planned will strengthen my body and my mind, and I’ll be able to take that home with me.”

Kumar also appreciates the camaraderie fostered through the WIM program.

“The ASF helps us veterans network with each other,” Kumar said. “This kind of program connects me with my fellow brothers and sisters who have similar experiences and mental and physical challenges. The bonding over living life with disabilities makes us all better and stronger in going forward with our daily lives.”

Thanks to grants and private donations, ASF provides equipment, helmets, water bottles, meals, hotel accommodations, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, ponchos when needed, and both digital and printed maps.
