WINDHAM, N.Y. – The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) will wrap up its Warriors in Motion® (WIM) summer programming with a two-day golf event at Windham Golf Club on September 11 and 12.
A dozen veterans are expecting to participate, making it one of the most popular WIM events the ASF hosts in the summer. U.S. Navy veteran Robert Goo is excited to hit the links with the ASF and his fellow servicemen and women. “The thing I’m looking forward to the most is seeing some of the veterans I’ve met through the ASF activities and that camaraderie of being together with them. It’s almost like a homecoming with friends I haven’t seen in a while,” he said.
The participants will arrive at Windham Golf Club at 10 a.m. on Wednesday to meet the ASF staff and volunteers and Jesse Muller, the Windham Golf Club pro. Once all the warriors arrive, Muller will give a group lesson at the driving range to give tips to the golfers on their long game. The group will then break for lunch back at the ASF’s Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center after the morning lesson.
The WIM group will return to Windham Golf Club for an afternoon short-game lesson at the putting green as well as some course play. Once the day at the course is over, the warriors will go to their hotels to get ready for dinner, which will be served at the ASF lodge at 5:30 p.m. and catered by Jessie’s Harvest House.
After a day of lessons, the warriors will put their new skills to the test on Thursday, as they will enjoy a full day of course play at Windham Golf Club, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The participants will play the entire morning until 12 p.m. when they will break for lunch at Mulligan’s Pub. After an hour recess, the veterans will head back out on the course and play golf until it’s time to leave at 4 p.m.
Thanks to grants received and private donations, the ASF is able to provide equipment, water bottles, all meals, hotel rooms, snacks, water, sports drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, ponchos (if necessary) and maps, both digital and paper copies.
“I’m so blessed to be a part of the ASF’s Warriors in Motion program,” Goo explained. “It helps us veterans out mentally and physically, and it’s very important for us to help each other out and be there for each other.”
