WINDHAM, N.Y. – The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) concluded its Warriors in Motion® (WIM) summer program schedule when it wrapped up its two-day WIM golf event on Thursday, September 12 at Windham Golf Club.
“The Adaptive Sports Foundation means a lot to me because it allows me to get back into the things I used to be able to do before my injury,” U.S. Army veteran Jonathan Kohl said. “It has allowed me to get into my golfing era this week.”
Ten U.S. Military veterans arrived at Windham Golf Club at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning and were greeted by the ASF staff and Windham Golf Club pro, Jesse Muller. Muller brought everyone to the driving range for a basic lesson for those new to the game of golf and provided helpful tips to those who have been playing for several years. After a lesson on the warriors’ long game, the WIM group ventured to the club’s putting green, where Muller taught proper techniques on and around the green. This lesson brought the warriors right to the lunch bell, where they enjoyed dining on the patio of Mulligan’s Pub, overlooking the golf course.
Once lunch was finished and everyone was fed, the WIM group put their new skills to the test with some course play. The veterans played until 3 p.m. before checking into their hotels and relaxing for a while before enjoying dinner at the ASF’s Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center, catered by Jessie’s Harvest House.
The warriors enjoyed a full day on the course on Thursday, as they played nine holes in the morning and were able to play the second nine in the afternoon, with another lunch break in between. Once they were finished with their round, the veterans departed, thus ending the ASF’s WIM summer programming.
“The ASF has helped me a lot by helping me focus on something more positive and concentrate a little bit more on keeping myself active,” Operation Desert Storm Veteran Wilfrido Alonzo explained. “This golf program was great, and hopefully a lot more veterans join up.”
The ASF’s final summer event will take place this Saturday, September 14, when it hosts its final Adaptive Skateboard Camp at the Tannersville Skatepark.
About the ASF’s Warriors in Motion Program
The Warriors in Motion program provides participating injured United States servicemen and women with a basic knowledge and practice of wellness and the importance of lifelong healthy living. All WIM programs are goal-oriented and empower the warrior to take charge of their own fitness and wellness. Thanks to grants received and private donations, the ASF is able to provide equipment, water bottles, all meals, hotel rooms, snacks, water, sports drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, ponchos (if necessary) and maps, both digital and paper copies.
